蛇は天地創造の昔から、知恵、財産をもたらす神として、信仰の対象となってきました。人は蛇を恐れるとともに 畏敬の念を抱き、洋の東西を問わず蛇に関する信仰や伝説は数えきれません。縄文の時代から農耕がさかんだった日本では、湿地を好んで生息する習性にもとづき、蛇は水神の使い、もしくは水神そのものと考えられていました。執念深いといわれるのは、狙った獲物を逃さないすぐれた捕獲能力と生命力の強さによるものでしょう。何度も脱皮を繰り返し、新しい体に生まれ変わることから、再生や不死の象徴とされています。

At the beginning of creation, snake, as god of wisdom and spirituality, has become an object of religious faith. People, since ancient times in the East and West, have viewed snakes with apprehension but yet held them in deep and reverent awe, resulting with uncountable number of beliefs, religious affiliations and folk tales. In Japan, since the Jomon era, when farming was the bases of Japanese culture, the snakes have made its habitat in a chosen preference of damp areas. They were considered to be messengers from god of water or rather the God of Water itself. Its capture ability and powerful survival skills maintain its implacable nature. The repeated process of shedding of its skin is known as a symbol of reclamation.
