Doll’s Festival
In March, the blue sky, the chirping song of birds, and even the occasional flurry of snow around the atelier reminds us of the arrival of spring. In contrast, we hear a cacophony from around the world. Not only natural disasters but also words and actions which could be called barbaric, and we feel uneasy when we think about the future and the people who cannot resist. We are thankful that we can see the cheerful faces in the atelier every day while providing small cooperation and support for each other as much as we can.
We decorated Hina dolls again this year. It is said that Doll’s Festival “Hinamatsuri” originated from a Chinese event called “Joushisetsu” to purify bad luck, and also it was born from a combination of several Japanese events including “Nagashi Bina” which is a custom to transfer bad luck to dolls and throw them into a river, and “Hiina Asobi” which is a doll play at a court during the Heian period.
Peach blossoms are considered as an auspicious plant symbolizing a long life because 100 years old is also read as “Momotose” (Momo means a peach.) in Japan, and the flowers were in full bloom in the beginning of March in the lunar calendar so that they have been displayed together with Hina dolls.
Cute Hina dolls remind us of the coming of spring in Japan.
